Man From The City Verse 1 Well you had me on the ropes By the first line Said I’d look you in the eye another time For luck And if looks could kill I’d kill you So I wouldn’t want to be you right now Say you don’t see it When you don’t feel it at all Verse 2 So you went out with the man from the city Holding hands and making plans for two I woke up in the night feeling shitty Wondering what’s happening to you Middle Eight And the world closes in And it’s right on time Blame it on the boys And the crooked lines Verse 3 I looked out from a single bed The sky at night was black but for the moon Wrap the covers around my head The man in the shop was asking after you She went out with the man from the city Holding hands and making plans for two
2.
Modern Living Verse 1 There was a man he knew me well Thought me to get high and start howling at the moon There were no fast trains, leaving from Euston So I’ll be an hour away Verse 2 Left down the alley I felt the sickening poke Head bowed over granite I choked as the skin broke He might be her she might be him There are no more revolutions Verse 3 There was a girl she knew me well Hung me out to dry as I howled at the moon There were no fast planes going to Berlin So I am two hours away Verse 4 Her words were ethereal her place filled divine Head bowed over granite we laughed at the same time I am with her but she’s not with me There are no more revolutions So take it back to your institutions Chorus I’ll see you in spring This is modern living we’re in This is life in the fast lane I don’t mean to scream Chorus repeat And I’ll see you again This is modern living my friend This is life in the fast lane I don’t mean to scream

Nine Liner 03:27
Nine Liner Verse 1 You have burned a bridge And held a flame to all that I hold dear A yellow goddess she dressed in bureaucracy And she’s spitting hate and fear Verse 2 I’m London I got punched and bribed As the satirical elite they hide And another day goes by And I’m slipping beneath the water line Verse 3 I have burnt a bridge And held a flame to all that you hold dear A yellow god he's dressed in hypocrisy And he's spitting hate and lies Middle eight The balance is all wrong While the pleasure it is gone And the dance is out of time And we’re slipping beneath the water line Chorus Fixed bayonets boys were going to war She came in autumn just as the dawn broke She’s down by the river Call in a nine liner What have we done, we are strangers I’m heavy weight and it’s dangerous I have held your hand and kissed your cheek A yellow god he’s dressed in bureaucracy Chorus Don’t worry boys we’ll be come home soon She came in spring just as the dawn broke He’s down by the river Call in a nine liner

Playing Away From Home verse 1 If you take, a bit for yourself It might be easier to see In front of your face and not Just the back of me Your friends they all know And I know, that you’ve been playing away From home But don’t let it stand in your way I know that you think it’s bad luck That follows me around I’m pretty sure that I’m just Stating facts are facts Should I stay or leave you in piece Make a bee line for the door Dally flat in my face a cure for the night before Your friends they all know and I know That you’ve been playing away from home But don’t let me stand in your way I know that you think it’s bad luck That follows me around I’m pretty sure that I’m just Stating facts are facts And these stains are just stains And the lies are just lies Like I said before till I’m blue In the face from drugs I slipped up again I thought it be easier To breath And call out your name but you turned your back on me The curtains were closed and I know That you’ve been playing away from home But don’t let me stand in your way Or you could ask me to stay Me on the left you on the right
5.
She Was A Runner Verse one You knew she was a runner And she ran away You knew the day was coming When memories fade to grey I don’t need you to tell me what this leads to Verse 2 She moves like a boxer She puts you on your side And now the war is over You got swept off with the tide I don’t need you to tell me that she bleeds to Chorus And now I’m scraping from the barrel I move my fingers to your face I’ve shaken all the rattles Surviving at this place You see I’ve treasured every insult Serves you better if you loose what you win Made a list of my failures They’re written on my skin Verse three So why do we shun What we’ve begun And now the war is over Lovers always run I do need you to tell me what this leads to Chorus Sets fire to the hoops that you jump through I won’t listen she won’t wait Didn’t need eternity But you tell me it’s too late You see I’ve treasured all the insults Serves you better if you loose what you win Made a list of my failures They’re written on my skin So why do we shun What we’ve begun And now the war is over Lovers always run And now the war is over She’ll be running back some day
6.
Dead Man 02:28
Dead Man What put you to sleep How long have you lain Under the covers Of another man’s name It’s long ago now Since you left for the edge To seek out another Look what you became But you just take It all in your stride The world will provide Just take what you steal And feel what you feel Your aires and your graces Seem so genuine now They belong to another Like the sweat on your brow But you just take It all in your stride The world will provide Just take what you steal And feel what you feel
7.
Northern Line Verse 1 I’ve been thinking of you Those who lead those who succeed Those who need Then I lost my nerve on the northern line Like a seed in the soil I sought the sunshine Now I’m not sure I want to be The other half of anyone I liked it better on my own It’s getting me home Chorus Turn don’t leave your lover waiting Turn can we stop the hating Turn why’s your belly aching man Verse 2 I think that we fit You say not one bit And that’s so funny Cause we like where we’re living We lie by the river and we talk like we’re lovers Then I’m walking you home Can’t do it alone Middle 8 Self help lives and faith is dead No one cares what’s in my head Don’t waste your breath it’s all been said But she’s the best friend that I ever had Repeat 1 Then I lost my nerve on the northern line Like a seed in the soil I sought the sunshine Now I’m not sure I want to be The other half of anyone I liked it better on my own It’s getting me home Chorus End How does it feel at the end of the day
8.
Give Up My Love Verse 1 She looks for her way down through the trees Give up my love there’s bending in this breeze We spat it out without tasting nothing Now we are bound and broken So give up my love Verse 2 Blood in eye muck on leather Give up my love we brought this down for pleasure That preacher's preaching at three in the morning While the sea makes bread with the sand Middle eight Now love becomes the dream Regret an artery At three in the morning Repeat verse 1 and chorus 1

about

Nine liner felt like a natural progression from Exit the house of plenty. Francis and I worked with the same team of people and it feels like it all came together without too much preparation or hassle. The process just seemed to flow. Also the song Nine Liner and title of the album is inspired by a poem written by my brother Tim Hogan. Francis and I are already talking about the next record where Tim’s poems and writings will feature more through out.
